Augusta, ME – A significant winter storm is forecasted to impact much of Maine starting tonight, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly as the storm intensifies.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will begin around 7 p.m. this evening and last until early Friday morning. Snowfall totals are expected to range between 6 and 10 inches across northern and central counties, with winds gusting up to 40 mph. These hazardous conditions are likely to disrupt Thursday commutes.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel, especially during peak snowfall tonight and early Thursday. If travel is unavoidable, the NWS advises keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle, including a flashlight, food, and water.

Areas under a Winter Storm Warning include Central Piscataquis, Northern Penobscot, and Northwest Aroostook Counties. Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Southeast Aroostook and Southern Piscataquis Counties, where 4 to 7 inches of snow is expected.

The NWS warns that the combination of snow and strong winds may lead to tree damage and power outages. Residents are urged to prepare for possible outages by charging devices and stocking up on essentials.

Looking ahead, temperatures will remain near freezing through the weekend, with a chance of lingering flurries on Saturday. Roads could stay slippery as crews work to clear snow.
