Blacksburg, Virginia – Dry roads and clear skies will give way to a wet and disruptive pattern within hours, as rain pushes into western Virginia by Tuesday afternoon and intensifies overnight, threatening travel along major corridors like I-81 and Route 460.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, showers and thunderstorms will develop Tuesday ahead of a cold front, with the heaviest rainfall expected Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. Widespread totals will reach around 0.50 inches in the Piedmont, with 1.00 inch or more possible across the mountains, especially near Bluefield, Blacksburg, and Boone.

Rain will expand across Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Christiansburg by late Tuesday, creating slick conditions during the evening commute. By early Wednesday, steady rainfall could reduce visibility and slow traffic on I-581, U.S. 220, and secondary roads prone to pooling water. In higher elevations, persistent showers may linger into Thursday, extending impacts for mountain communities.

Drivers should plan for longer travel times, avoid low-lying flood-prone roads, and keep headlights on during heavy rain. Residents are urged to charge devices and monitor local alerts in case isolated power disruptions occur during thunderstorms.

Rain will taper briefly late Thursday before another round of wet weather approaches by the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve, with the next update expected within 12 to 24 hours.
