Birmingham, Ala. – Strong thunderstorms could strike central Alabama between 4 and 10 p.m. Thursday, with forecasters warning of damaging wind gusts and hail large enough to dent vehicles and damage roofs.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, storms may become severe across a wide swath of the state today and again Friday, especially from Tuscaloosa to Auburn. Gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to a quarter in size are possible, mainly in central and northern counties like Jefferson, Shelby, and Calhoun. The far southeast, including Dothan and Eufaula, faces lower risk.
Cities including Birmingham, Montgomery, and Anniston are all in the zone for severe weather during the evening commute. Power outages, fallen branches, and road debris could affect travel on I-20, I-65, and I-85. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
If hail or strong wind approaches, seek shelter indoors and avoid windows. Charge your devices and avoid unnecessary travel during active storm periods.
Severe weather threats may return Friday—another round of storms is possible.
