Binghamton, NY – Upstate New York faces bitter cold and significant snowfall as a lake effect snowstorm intensifies across the region. The National Weather Service in Binghamton predicts snow will persist through Wednesday night, with some areas receiving up to 18 inches.

The heaviest snow will target northern Oneida County, where totals could exceed a foot. According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will begin Monday night and intensify Tuesday evening. Temperatures will hover in the low 20s, creating hazardous travel conditions. Winds accompanying the storm may also lead to drifting snow and reduced visibility.

Snow bands will move south into the Finger Lakes Tuesday night, impacting areas such as Syracuse and Auburn with 4 to 6 inches. By Wednesday, the bands will gradually shift northward, bringing lighter snow showers to Central New York. Communities near Cortland and Ithaca should expect 2 to 3 inches by midweek.

Officials urge residents to monitor forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours. Plow crews will work overnight to maintain passable roads, but delays and closures are likely.

The lake effect snow event highlights the region’s unpredictable winter weather. Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions and ensure emergency kits are stocked. The storm is expected to taper off late Wednesday as cold air exits the area.
