Binghamton and surrounding areas are bracing for heavy snowfall Friday as a winter storm moves through central New York and northeastern Pennsylvania. Significant snow accumulations are expected, particularly in elevated regions.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall rates, ranging from 1 to 2 inches per hour, are expected during the morning hours, impacting commutes along the I-81 corridor. Valley locations could see 1 to 4 inches, while higher elevations above 1,500 feet may receive between 6 and 12 inches. In the Catskills, totals of up to 16 inches are possible.
The heavy snow is likely to make travel hazardous and may cause power outages due to falling trees and power lines. Authorities urge residents to delay unnecessary travel and to equip vehicles with emergency supplies if driving is unavoidable.
For up-to-date road conditions, New York residents can dial 511, while Pennsylvania residents are advised to visit 511PA.com.
The storm is forecast to taper off by late afternoon. Residents are urged to exercise caution as conditions evolve.
