Binghamton, NY – A narrow overnight window could bring flooding concerns across central New York, with heavy rain targeting already saturated ground between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a cold front moving west to east will produce widespread rain with embedded thunderstorms tonight. Rainfall totals of 0.50 to 1.00 inch are expected, with localized amounts up to 1.25 inches possible, especially west of Interstate 81. The greatest flood risk is expected during the late evening and overnight hours when rainfall rates peak.

Communities including Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, and Cortland may see water ponding on roads and rapid rises in small streams. Low-lying and poor drainage areas are most vulnerable, particularly along Route 17 and I-81 corridors where visibility and road conditions could deteriorate quickly.

Behind the front, temperatures will fall sharply. Highs in the 60s and 70s Saturday will drop into the 30s Sunday night, with some areas nearing the 20s by Monday night, raising concerns for frost and freeze impacts.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and allow extra travel time overnight. Residents should secure outdoor items and monitor local alerts.

Rain tapers Sunday morning, but colder air lingers into early next week. Additional advisories may be issued if flooding develops overnight.
