Binghamton, New York – Drivers along I-81 and Route 17 will see a brief springlike surge into the upper 40s and near 50 degrees Saturday afternoon before colder air and light snow return late Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, quiet and milder conditions will settle over central and southern New York through Saturday. Highs will climb into the upper 40s to near 50 in Binghamton, Elmira and Ithaca, while Syracuse and Utica hold in the low to mid-40s. Sunshine and light winds will make for favorable travel through Saturday evening.
Changes begin after midnight Saturday night as a cold front moves through. Light snow is expected to develop between midnight and sunrise Sunday, with minor accumulations possible across Broome, Tioga and Chenango counties. Even a quick coating could create slick spots on I-81 from Binghamton to Cortland and along I-86 west toward Elmira.
Temperatures will fall steadily Sunday, dropping from the 30s in the morning into the 20s by evening. That rapid temperature decline may refreeze any leftover moisture on bridges and overpasses, especially along I-88 east of Binghamton and Route 17 toward Oneonta.
Motorists should prepare for changing road conditions late Saturday night by reducing speed and allowing extra stopping distance. Keep headlights on during snow showers and remain alert for black ice Sunday night.
Colder air settles in to close out the weekend, and additional updates may be issued if snowfall totals trend higher.
