Binghamton, NY — Bitter arctic cold is expected to move into Binghamton beginning Friday night, bringing dangerous wind chills that could last through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a very cold arctic air mass combined with gusty winds will drive wind chills well below zero starting Friday night. Forecast data indicates wind chills ranging from -15° to -25° across the Binghamton area, with the coldest readings most likely during overnight and early morning hours Saturday and Sunday.

Forecasters warned that these wind chills pose a heightened risk for frostbite and hypothermia, particularly during prolonged outdoor exposure. Under these conditions, exposed skin can freeze in as little as 30 minutes or less, especially when winds increase.

The extreme cold is expected to persist into early next week, with temperatures slowly moderating by Monday afternoon. In addition to the cold, the National Weather Service noted it is monitoring the potential for a winter storm from Sunday afternoon into Monday, which could compound impacts if snow develops while temperatures remain low.

The prolonged cold may affect travel, outdoor activities, and vulnerable populations. Vehicles may have difficulty starting, and untreated roads could remain icy if snow occurs. Commuters, students, and workers traveling during early morning hours are especially urged to take precautions.

Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers including hats and gloves, and bring pets indoors. Officials also encourage checking on elderly neighbors and ensuring adequate home heating.

The National Weather Service urges residents in Binghamton to monitor forecast updates through the weekend, as additional cold-related advisories or storm alerts may be issued.
