Billings, Montana – Windy conditions are expected to return across south-central Montana on Monday, with strong wind gusts during the morning hours that could impact travel and outdoor activities, according to the National Weather Service Billings office.

Forecasters report that the strongest winds are expected Monday morning, with peak wind gusts ranging from 35 to 50 miles per hour in parts of the region. Gusty crosswinds may be especially noticeable across open and exposed areas of the plains.

The National Weather Service highlights Interstate 90 near Billings, Livingston, and Big Timber as corridors where crosswinds could affect high-profile vehicles, including trucks, trailers, and recreational vehicles. Additional travel impacts are possible along U.S. Highway 87 near Harlowton and Lewistown, as well as U.S. Highway 212 near Red Lodge, where localized terrain effects can enhance wind speeds.

Forecast timing charts show wind gusts increasing shortly after midnight, peaking during the early to mid-morning hours, and gradually diminishing by late afternoon and evening. Communities such as Billings, Hardin, Livingston, and Harlowton may experience the strongest gusts during this period.

In addition to travel concerns, forecasters note that elevated grass fire danger may develop across portions of the plains due to dry conditions combined with strong winds. While no red flag warnings are currently in effect, residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark fires.

The National Weather Service advises drivers to keep both hands on the wheel, reduce speed, and be alert for sudden gusts, particularly on east-west oriented roadways.

This weather pattern may be especially impactful for morning commuters, commercial drivers, and ranchers working outdoors during peak wind hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and plan travel accordingly as windy conditions move through the region Monday.
