Hilo, Hawaii – Visibility could drop to zero within minutes on the Big Island summits tonight as snow and freezing fog coat the upper slopes of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa through 6 a.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for elevations above 12,000 feet. Up to 2 inches of snow is possible, along with freezing drizzle that may create a light glaze of ice on exposed surfaces. Periods of freezing fog could sharply reduce visibility, especially along summit access roads.
While snowfall rates are expected to taper overnight, slick and icy conditions may linger into the early morning hours. The Mauna Kea Access Road and observatory routes could become hazardous, particularly where temperatures remain below freezing and moisture refreezes on pavement.
Travel to the summits is discouraged unless absolutely necessary. Drivers who must ascend should use four-wheel drive vehicles, carry cold-weather gear and be prepared for sudden drops in visibility. Even minor icing can create treacherous footing near parking areas and facilities.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise Sunday, but icy patches may persist through the morning. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall redevelops or freezing drizzle continues.
