Bicyclist Killed in Laplace Crash on US 61, Authorities Urge Safety

Laplace, LA – A 61-year-old bicyclist was killed Friday night after being struck by a pickup on US 61.

The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. near Belle Terre Boulevard. According to Louisiana State Police Troop B, John Howard of Laplace was crossing the highway when he entered the path of a 2016 Ford F-150. Howard was hit in the right southbound lane after crossing multiple lanes of traffic.

Howard was transported to a local hospital but died from his injuries. The driver of the pickup was unharmed and showed no signs of impairment, though a voluntary blood sample was taken for analysis. Police are awaiting toxicology results for Howard.

Troopers remind bicyclists to follow traffic laws, use reflective gear, and remain visible, especially in low-light conditions. More bicycle safety tips are available on the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission’s website.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
