La Crosse, WI – A new wave of freezing rain is sweeping across Wisconsin, creating treacherous travel conditions on Saturday. Several accidents and slide-offs have already been reported, with weather officials urging extreme caution.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, freezing rain will continue moving northward through 3 p.m., coating untreated roads with ice. Even a light glaze can make roads dangerously slippery, officials warn. Despite their capabilities, four-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles offer no advantage in stopping on ice, the advisory stressed.
Travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary trips. If travel is essential, experts recommend slowing down, increasing following distance, and preparing for sudden stops. Pedestrians should also exercise caution as icy walkways can lead to falls.
Road crews are working to treat main thoroughfares, but icy patches remain prevalent, particularly on bridges and secondary roads. Officials encourage residents to stay updated on local road conditions via 511wi.gov.
As winter intensifies, safety is paramount. Stay off the roads if possible, and check forecasts regularly for updates.
