Bibb County, GA – A police pursuit in Bibb County took a dramatic turn Thursday after a suspect reportedly leaped into the Ocmulgee River during a chase, authorities said.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. Toni Lewis had conducted a traffic stop involving a Lincoln sedan connected to a domestic disturbance call at the Red Carpet Inn on Riverside Drive. Deputies said the driver suddenly accelerated away, entering Interstate 75 before exiting and abandoning the vehicle near the river.

The suspect allegedly jumped into the Ocmulgee River to evade capture. Deputies later detected movement on a thermal device showing a person running into a nearby wooded area but were unable to locate the individual after a search.

Investigators identified the suspect as a 32-year-old male. Warrants are being secured for fleeing or attempting to elude police for a felony offense, obstruction of officers, and reckless driving, with additional charges possible, according to deputies.

No injuries were reported, and the search for the suspect remains ongoing as of Thursday afternoon.
