Albuquerque, NM – A quick-acting New Mexico State Police sergeant safely recovered a missing child during a traffic stop Tuesday evening after a License Plate Reader (LPR) alert flagged a vehicle linked to a child abduction case.

According to the New Mexico State Police, the stop occurred around 7:35 p.m. on November 3 near Prospect Avenue and San Mateo Boulevard in Albuquerque. Officers identified the driver as 26-year-old Jose Carrillo Gonzalez, who allegedly had a full extradition warrant out of Chandler, Arizona, for kidnapping of a minor, assault, and custodial interference.

Police said the missing child was found inside the vehicle and safely released to a guardian following the stop. Gonzalez was subsequently booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on his outstanding warrant.

Authorities credited LPR technology for enabling the rapid location and recovery, calling it a “vital tool” for protecting missing and endangered individuals across New Mexico.

“This case demonstrates how technology enhances officer awareness and helps bring children home safely,” state police said in a release.

The investigation into the Arizona case remains ongoing, and Gonzalez faces extradition proceedings.
