Martinsburg, WV – A fatal motorcycle crash in Berkeley County Saturday night has left one man dead, with investigators pointing to speed as a possible factor.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 9 p.m. on April 18 to the 900 block of Hedgesville Road for a reported traffic collision involving injuries. When first responders arrived, they found a motorcyclist who had struck a guardrail and sustained serious injuries.

Emergency medical personnel began treatment at the scene before transporting the man to Berkeley Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

According to officials, the victim has been identified as Robert Byron Elliott, 37, of Paw Paw, West Virginia. Authorities said next of kin have been notified.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office, including an on-call accident reconstructionist, responded to examine the scene. Preliminary findings indicate the motorcycle was allegedly traveling above the posted speed limit prior to the crash. Deputies believe the excessive speed may have caused the operator to lose control, ultimately leading to the fatal impact.

The crash remains under active investigation, and no additional details have been released at this time.

Berkeley County is part of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle region, near the Martinsburg metro area, where Hedgesville Road serves as a key local route.
