Beecher, IL – The Beecher Police Department has launched a new Blue Envelope Program designed to promote safer, more positive interactions between law enforcement officers and individuals on the autism spectrum or those with other communication needs.
According to the Beecher Police Department, the program is free, voluntary, and does not require registration. Participants receive a blue envelope that can hold a driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance while also serving as a visual indicator that the driver may have communication preferences or require additional support during a traffic stop.
The department said the envelope is intended to help reduce misunderstandings and ease anxiety for both drivers and officers by providing important information before communication begins.
The envelope includes space for participants to indicate preferred methods of communication, such as verbal communication, sign language, pictures, electronic devices, or writing. It also allows drivers to note whether they are nonverbal, on the autism spectrum, or have other communication challenges, along with emergency contact information.
Instructions printed on the envelope provide guidance for both drivers and police officers. Drivers are reminded to pull over safely, keep their hands visible, and wait for the officer’s instructions before reaching for documents. Officers are encouraged to communicate calmly, avoid sudden movements, and recognize that anxiety or atypical responses may be related to a disability rather than noncompliance.
The program is open to anyone who lives, works, or spends a significant amount of time in Beecher. Blue envelopes are available for pickup at the Beecher Police Department, 250 W. Church Road.
