Bedford, IA – A Fall storm will sweep into Taylor County this evening, delivering a wintry mix of snow and light ice that will make post-Thanksgiving travel increasingly hazardous through early Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service Des Moines office, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday. Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, along with a light glaze of ice that could quickly coat bridges, rural curves, and shaded stretches from Lenox to New Market. The mix begins this evening and continues in waves overnight and Saturday.

According to the Iowa DOT, early precipitation may fall as freezing drizzle before steady snow develops, creating slick spots along US-148, IA-2, and county roads that feed into Bedford. Crews warn that mixed precipitation will limit pretreatment effectiveness. Drivers should reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and monitor the Iowa 511 app or 511ia.org for updated conditions before traveling.

According to Taylor County emergency management, scattered powerline icing cannot be ruled out if drizzle persists before temperatures fall further. Residents are encouraged to charge phones, keep blankets and flashlights in vehicles, and allow extra time for any post-holiday trips. Outdoor steps, farm lots, and driveways may glaze quickly this evening, increasing fall risk.

Snow will taper late Saturday night, but untreated roads and sidewalks may remain icy into daybreak Sunday.
