Batavia, Ill. — The City of Batavia shared today that the Batavia Police Department will be hosting a mini-camp for kids on emergency and disaster preparedness. The free course will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The classes in the mini-camp “Preparedness, Police and Popsicles” are offered by the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the Batavia Police Department. The Emergency and Disaster Preparedness classes will be taught by the Kane County Emergency Management Team.

The CIty of Batavia shared that the classes will teach kids how to be prepared in case of an emergency in ways that are age-appropriate, engaging and educational. The classes are designed to help kids build confidence by giving them practical skills to use.

The mini-camp will cover the differences between emergencies, disasters and hazards. Kids will learn about protective actions, family communication plans, disaster supply kits, Go Bags, gun safety and what to do in severe weather.

The First Aid portion of the class will teach kids simple first-aid skills like how and when to call 911. They will also learn about protective equipment, hand washing, assessing a situation and how to stop bleeding.

Each student will take home a Go Bag with emergency equipment provided. Lunch, which kids pack on their own, will be with Batavia officers and K9 River. Kids will also get a tour of the police department and emergency vehicles. Each kid will also be given a popsicle. Though the class is free, registration is required and there is a space limit.
