Baltimore, MD – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket Maryland and surrounding areas with heavy snow and ice starting late Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for central Maryland, including Baltimore, from 10 p.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the warning, the region could see snow accumulations between 5 and 9 inches, with up to 12 inches possible in isolated areas if heavy snow bands develop. Ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch are also possible, particularly along major roadways, including Interstate 66. Hazardous conditions are expected to significantly impact Monday’s morning and evening commutes.
The storm’s heaviest snowfall is predicted overnight Sunday into early Monday, with a potential lull during Monday afternoon. However, another round of heavy precipitation is likely Monday evening before tapering off early Tuesday.
Travelers are advised to avoid non-essential trips during the storm. For those who must travel, officials recommend carrying a winter safety kit that includes blankets, flashlights, food, and water. Emergency crews urge drivers to monitor road conditions by calling 511 or using state transportation websites for updates.
Monday’s high temperatures will hover near 28°F with east winds at 5 to 9 mph, intensifying the chill. Conditions will improve Tuesday, bringing sunny skies and a high near 33°F, though roads may remain hazardous.
Stay alert to weather updates and prepare for potential power outages due to ice and strong winds. Community members should also check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure proper supplies are on hand.
