Baltimore County, MD – A fatal multi-vehicle crash on the inner loop of Interstate 695 in Baltimore County left one man dead and caused significant traffic delays Wednesday morning.
According to Maryland State Police, troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack responded shortly after 8 a.m. to a crash on the inner loop of I-695 at Perring Parkway involving four vehicles.
Police identified the victim as James Beckham, 31, of Essex. Beckham was the driver and sole occupant of a Nissan Sentra and was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, according to state police.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate the Nissan Sentra was traveling on the inner loop of I-695 when, for unknown reasons, it struck the corner of a Toyota C-HR. The initial impact led to subsequent collisions involving a Nissan Altima and a Toyota RAV4.
The driver of the Nissan Altima, identified as Dante Summers, 26, of Nottingham, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. Police said the driver and sole occupant of the Toyota C-HR was not injured. The driver and one passenger in the Toyota RAV4 were also reported uninjured.
Emergency medical personnel from Baltimore County Fire Department responded to the scene along with officers from the Baltimore County Police Department to assist Maryland State Police. Crews from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration handled road closures and detours as the investigation continued.
All lanes on the inner loop of I-695 were closed for several hours and reopened at approximately 11:30 a.m., officials said.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
