Hanford, CA – Back-to-back winter storms are expected to bring treacherous conditions to roads in California and Nevada this weekend, with State Route 99, Interstate 5, and mountain passes facing severe impacts.

The National Weather Service in Hanford reports that the first storm is already delivering snow and rain across the region, with conditions intensifying through Sunday morning. A second, stronger storm will move in Sunday night and continue into Monday, bringing heavier snowfall and widespread disruptions. Snow totals in the Sierra Nevada could exceed 8 inches, with localized areas at higher elevations seeing even greater amounts.

Travelers should prepare for hazardous road conditions, especially on mountain passes, where icy roads and limited visibility are likely. Key routes, including SR 99 in California and portions of Interstate 80 in Nevada, could see closures or significant delays. Authorities urge drivers to avoid nonessential travel, carry emergency kits, and monitor real-time updates from Caltrans and NDOT.

Lower elevations will experience cold rain and freezing temperatures, increasing the risk of slick roads. Power outages are also possible as winds strengthen during the second storm.

After Monday, forecasters anticipate a brief break in the weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, but another storm system is expected to arrive late in the week, extending travel impacts in the region. Residents should use the coming days to prepare for additional snow, rain, and cold weather.

Drivers and residents in affected areas are encouraged to check local forecasts and heed warnings. The NWS advises extra caution, especially in mountainous areas, where conditions can change rapidly. Stay informed and plan ahead for safe travel.
