Austin, Texas – Morning sunshine across South Central Texas will give way to increasing thunderstorm activity this afternoon, bringing the potential for heavy rain and dangerous winds in multiple counties. The National Weather Service warns that some storms could deliver gusts up to 50 mph, creating hazardous conditions on area roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop by mid-afternoon and persist into the evening. Pockets of locally heavy rainfall may cause brief street flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Strong winds could also down small tree limbs and cause isolated power outages.

Cities including Austin, San Antonio, Georgetown, and New Braunfels are under the greatest risk window from mid-afternoon through late evening. Drivers should be prepared for sudden downpours and reduced visibility, especially along I-35 and US 281. Outdoor activities should be postponed when storms approach, and residents are urged to move indoors at the first sign of thunder.

Storm chances taper overnight, but additional showers are possible Thursday as warm, humid conditions persist.
