Aurora, Ill. — The Aurora Police Department shared on Friday, July 11 that a new ordinance would be in place to target reckless driving in the city.
The Aurora Police Department said that from 2020 to 2024, they have responded to 2,477 reckless driving reports, 335 drag racing complaints and an unidentified number of incidents involving injuries and property damage.
After receiving a growing number of complaints in the last few years about street racing, stunt driving and takeover-style gatherings, the city has found a way to address the problem with a new ordinance.
The Aurora City Council has passed a Vehicular Nuisance Ordinance, which makes it unlawful for drivers to participate in a number of reckless driving situations. These include street racing, stunt driving or sideshows and unlawful vehicle caravans or rallies. Police now have the authority to cite these activities, even after the fact with evidence from an investigation. Police can also fine drivers $1,000 or more, with $2,500 fines for repeated offenses. Lastly, officers have the right to impound vehicles involved in these unlawful activities.
