Aurora, IL – Police are warning residents about a growing trend of “ruse entry burglaries,” where criminals use deception to gain access to homes and steal valuables or cash. The Aurora Police Department shared the alert Tuesday, warning that offenders often target senior citizens during daylight hours.

According to Aurora Police, suspects commonly pose as workers from utility companies, public service departments, or tree trimming services. While one person distracts the homeowner outside, another sneaks inside to steal jewelry, electronics, or money.

Authorities urge residents to take precautions: don’t open the door to unfamiliar individuals, verify their identity by calling the company directly using official contact numbers, and keep doors and windows locked. Police also advise keeping valuables in secure locations and avoiding face-to-face interactions if someone claims to need assistance—help can be offered through a closed door or by calling a friend.

Residents should contact Aurora Police immediately if something feels suspicious, if someone attempts to enter without permission, or if items go missing after a visitor’s departure.

Police emphasize staying alert and trusting instincts. “Protect your home and your community—if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t,” the department advised.
