Aurora, IL – Police Seek Public’s Help in Locating Suspect in January 1 Homicide

Aurora police are searching for 26-year-old Jose Barragan, who is wanted in connection with a fatal New Year’s Day shooting that claimed the life of an 82-year-old man. A warrant for Barragan’s arrest was issued on January 7, but authorities have yet to locate him.

According to the Aurora Police Department, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 6:52 p.m. in the 0-49 block of North Anderson Street on January 1. Upon arrival, officers found Fidel Macias-Hernandez inside his home with multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators believe the suspect fired multiple rounds into the residence from outside before fleeing on foot.

Macias-Hernandez was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on January 16. Following an investigation, police identified Barragan as the suspect and obtained charges against him, including two counts of first-degree murder and multiple felony weapons offenses.

Barragan is described as 5-foot-4, 130 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, and tattoos on his chest, fingers, and forearms. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Aurora police at (630) 256-5500 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.
