Boulder, CO – A moderate geomagnetic storm is impacting Earth after the arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME), increasing the potential for visible northern lights across parts of the northern United States and Canada Sunday night.
According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, geomagnetic activity reached G2 (Moderate) storm levels at 17:59 UTC on Saturday, Aug. 2, following the arrival of the CME. Forecasters expect additional periods of G2 storming through 23:59 UTC on Aug. 2, with G1 (Minor) storm conditions potentially continuing into the early hours of Monday, Aug. 3 (UTC).
A G2 geomagnetic storm is considered a moderate disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field. While these events are not uncommon, they can expand the southern reach of the aurora, giving skywatchers in portions of the northern U.S. a better chance of seeing the northern lights if skies are dark and clear.
NOAA advises the public to monitor the Space Weather Prediction Center for the latest updates. Residents located under or near the forecast auroral oval may have opportunities to observe the aurora after sunset, weather permitting.
The agency also noted that infrastructure operators have been notified of potential impacts. Minor fluctuations in power grids are possible, along with a slight risk of satellite operational effects and intermittent GPS degradation during periods of elevated geomagnetic activity.
Aurora visibility depends on local cloud cover, light pollution, and the strength of the geomagnetic storm. Even during G2 conditions, sightings are not guaranteed in every location.
Skywatchers interested in viewing the aurora should seek dark locations away from city lights and monitor local weather forecasts for the best viewing conditions.
