Greenville, S.C. – After days of summer heat and oppressive humidity, much cooler weather is set to arrive across the western Carolinas later this week, bringing a welcome break for millions across Upstate South Carolina, western North Carolina, and northeast Georgia. High temperatures are expected to fall below seasonal averages beginning Thursday and remain that way through at least Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, cooler air will spread into the region Thursday, replacing the recent stretch of hot and humid conditions. Afternoon highs are forecast to reach only the upper 70s to lower 80s across the North Carolina mountains, including Asheville, Boone, Brevard, and Burnsville, while much of the foothills and Piedmont will top out in the lower to middle 80s.
Communities across Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Gaffney, Hickory, Charlotte, Union, Laurens, and surrounding areas are expected to see highs generally ranging from the lower to middle 80s, with a few locations in northeast Georgia reaching the mid to upper 80s. Even those temperatures are several degrees below what is typical for late July.
The cooler pattern should provide relief for outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone spending extended time outside after recent days of dangerous heat and high humidity. While residents should continue staying hydrated during outdoor activities, the reduced temperatures will lower the risk of heat-related illnesses compared to earlier this week.
The refreshing pattern is expected to persist through at least Saturday, with the National Weather Service continuing to monitor conditions for any changes. Additional forecast updates will be issued as the cooler air settles across the western Carolinas.
