Caribou, ME – Drivers across northern Maine face slick and hazardous roads through the day Friday as a mix of snow, sleet, and ice continues to fall, creating dangerous travel during both the morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Friday for Aroostook County, including Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent, and Van Buren. Snow totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected, along with up to 1 inch of sleet and around one-tenth inch of ice .

Roads across northern routes, including sections of U.S. Route 1 and Route 161, are likely to become snow-covered and icy. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, increasing the risk of spinouts and slowdowns through the afternoon hours.

Emergency officials warn that even light ice accumulation could create treacherous conditions, especially in rural areas where treatment may lag. Visibility may also drop during heavier bursts of precipitation.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and check Maine 511 for live road conditions. The storm tapers late Friday, but additional advisories could follow if conditions worsen.
