Arlington Heights, IL – Two people were stabbed inside an apartment building, prompting an attempted murder investigation and arrest.

According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, officers responded around 7 a.m. Thursday, April 30, to a report of a stabbing at an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Dunton Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located two victims inside a sixth-floor unit suffering from stab wounds to the head and neck.

Police said a family member of one victim allegedly interrupted the attack, causing the suspect to flee. Officers secured the building while paramedics transported both victims to Northwest Community Hospital for treatment.

Investigators later reviewed downtown surveillance footage, which showed the suspect allegedly fleeing west along Northwest Highway. Officers located the individual near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Route 53 and took him into custody about an hour after the initial 911 call. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered, police said.

Authorities identified the suspect as 18-year-old Damian R. Engelmann of Shorewood. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, a Class X felony, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Police said one victim suffered stab wounds to the ear and neck, while the other sustained multiple injuries to the head, neck, and hands. Both victims survived.

Engelmann appeared in court Thursday, May 1, where a judge ordered him held in custody pending further proceedings.

The case remains under investigation.
