Little Rock, Arkansas – A Winter Storm Watch has been extended and expanded across much of Arkansas as forecasters warn of a high-impact winter weather event heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, the watch is now in effect from Friday afternoon, Jan. 23, through late Saturday night, Jan. 24, 2026, covering large portions of central, northern, southern, eastern, western, and southeast Arkansas, including the Little Rock metropolitan area.
Forecasters say central to northern Arkansas could receive 4 to 8 inches of snow, with localized totals exceeding 8 to 10 inches in some areas. Across the southern third of the state, a mix of snow and sleet totaling 1 to 3 inches is expected. In far southern Arkansas, freezing rain accumulations of one-quarter to one-half inch are possible, raising concerns for significant ice-related damage.
The combination of heavy snow and ice could lead to widespread power outages and tree damage, particularly in areas experiencing prolonged freezing rain. The National Weather Service warns that travel could be nearly impossible at times, with conditions deteriorating rapidly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
The timing of the storm could significantly impact the Friday evening commute, especially as precipitation intensity increases Friday night. Hazardous conditions may persist into early Sunday morning in some areas.
Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely, as confidence continues to increase on precipitation types and exact amounts. Emergency officials recommend limiting travel during the storm window and preparing for potential long-duration power outages.
Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including blankets, extra clothing, food, water, and a flashlight.
Forecasters emphasized that additional advisories or warnings are likely as the event approaches and impacts become clearer.
