Little Rock, Arkansas – A surge of arctic air is expected to bring winter weather back to Arkansas late this week, with cold temperatures and periods of snow creating potential travel and safety concerns across the state. Overnight lows are expected to fall near 12 degrees, while daytime temperatures remain well below normal through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest conditions are expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a polar air mass settles into the region. As moisture moves through the state, rain is expected to change to snow in several areas, especially during overnight and early morning hours when surface temperatures dip below freezing.

Northern and central Arkansas, including the Ozarks, the Arkansas River Valley, and the Little Rock metro, are most likely to see snowfall and slick road conditions. Snow-covered and icy stretches are possible along Interstate 40, Interstate 30, Interstate 49, and U.S. 67, particularly on bridges and untreated secondary roads. Even light accumulations could lead to hazardous driving during the coldest periods.

State emergency management officials urge residents to limit non-essential travel during snow events, dress in warm layers, and protect exposed pipes from freezing. Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and carry winter emergency kits.

Cold and snowy conditions are expected to persist into early next week, and additional winter weather advisories may be issued as the system develops.
