Little Rock, Ark. – A tornado watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday for much of northern and central Arkansas, where severe storms are expected to bring damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 262 includes 27 counties across the state, stretching from Benton and Washington in the northwest to Jackson and Randolph in the northeast. Cities such as Fayetteville, Russellville, and Mountain Home are within the watch zone.

The greatest risk will be late Friday afternoon into early evening, when atmospheric instability and wind shear could support rotating storms. Residents along U.S. Route 412 and Interstate 40 should be alert for rapidly changing weather and potential warnings. Outdoor activities should be postponed, and mobile home residents are urged to identify nearby shelter options.

Power outages and tree damage are also possible if storms intensify. Emergency management officials recommend charging devices, reviewing tornado safety plans, and staying tuned to local alerts.

This is the first large-scale tornado watch issued in the region since early spring. More watches or warnings may follow if storm conditions evolve.
