Memphis, Tennessee – Drivers along the Arkansas-Tennessee border are facing near-zero visibility early Monday as dense fog reduces sightlines to one quarter mile or less, creating dangerous conditions on key river crossings and interstates.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST for East Arkansas counties including Crittenden and Mississippi, and for West Tennessee counties including Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale. Visibility may fall below a quarter mile at times, especially near the Mississippi River and in low-lying rural areas.
TDOT and ARDOT crews report rapidly changing visibility along I-40 and I-55, particularly near the Hernando DeSoto Bridge and the I-40 Mississippi River bridge. US-64 and US-79 corridors could also see sudden drops in visibility before sunrise.
Motorists should slow down immediately when entering fog, use low-beam headlights and leave extra distance between vehicles. River bridges may remain damp and could develop isolated slick spots if temperatures briefly touch the freezing mark.
Fog is expected to gradually lift by mid-morning as temperatures rise, but pockets of low visibility may linger near the river. Additional advisories could be issued if dense fog persists beyond 9 a.m.
