Fort Smith, Arkansas – Floodwaters have shut down major roads and triggered water rescues across Sebastian County, Arkansas, and neighboring parts of Haskell, Le Flore, and Sequoyah counties in Oklahoma, with a Flood Warning in effect until 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, ongoing storms have dumped 3 to 7 inches of rain over the region. Local media report multiple water rescues and numerous low-water crossings now impassable from Fort Smith to Sallisaw, Barling, and Muldrow. Creeks and rivers are rapidly rising, especially near Hackett, Pocola, Roland, and Marble City, putting low-lying areas and neighborhoods at risk.
Major travel routes, including U.S. Highway 64 and State Highway 9, remain hazardous or closed. Emergency managers urge residents to stay off flooded roads and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If you must drive, never cross flooded areas—turn around, don’t drown.
Flood impacts may linger through the night as water slowly recedes. Residents near Brushy Lake State Park, Rock Island, and the Fort Smith Regional Airport should remain alert for additional warnings. Move to higher ground if you see rising water or are told to evacuate.
Further advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. The warning remains active until 11:45 p.m.
