Shreveport, LA – Subfreezing temperatures across the Ark-La-Tex disrupted early morning travel Tuesday as several cities woke up to record or near-record cold, creating slick roads and widespread frost.
According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, temperatures dropped to 25 degrees in Shreveport and 26 degrees in Monroe, both nearing or breaking daily records. El Dorado plunged to 23 degrees, while Texarkana and Tyler hovered near 28 degrees, tying or surpassing previous marks. The rare March chill stretched across northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and East Texas.
Drivers encountered patchy frost on elevated roadways, especially along Interstate 20 through Bossier City and into Webster Parish, as well as sections of I-49 near Monroe. Bridges and overpasses froze first, prompting transportation officials to urge slower speeds during the morning commute.
The cold also raised concerns for exposed pipes and sensitive vegetation. Residents are urged to cover outdoor plants, drip faucets overnight, and bring pets indoors as temperatures dip again late Tuesday night.
Conditions begin to improve by Wednesday afternoon as highs climb into the mid-50s, but another cold start is expected before a steady warmup into the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued if temperatures fall further overnight.
