Flagstaff, AZ – A powerful winter storm is set to bring significant snowfall and dangerous travel conditions across northern Arizona from Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for areas above 6,000 feet, including the Kaibab Plateau, Mogollon Rim, and White Mountains.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the storm will begin impacting the region by noon Thursday and continue until 5 a.m. MST Friday. Expected snowfall amounts range from 6 to 16 inches, with localized higher amounts up to 18 inches in some areas. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 55 mph, leading to potential tree damage and power outages.
The heaviest snow is expected in Flagstaff, Williams, and Forest Lakes, with accumulations of 8 to 12 inches. Jacob Lake could see 6 to 8 inches, while Show Low and Alpine may receive 4 to 6 inches. Blowing snow and low visibility will make travel hazardous, particularly along Interstate 40 and other mountain roads.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid travel if possible. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. For updated road conditions, travelers can visit az511.gov or call 511.
Strong winds and heavy snow could result in downed power lines and tree damage, adding to the storm’s dangers. Residents are advised to prepare for potential power outages and exercise caution outdoors.
The storm is expected to clear by early Friday morning, but lingering snow and icy roads may continue to impact travel into the weekend.
