Yuma, Arizona – Residents in Yuma are being urged to limit outdoor activity this weekend as elevated dust levels prompt a High Pollution Watch for PM-10 particles from Friday, May 3 through Saturday, May 4.
According to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), strong winds and dry conditions are expected to kick up significant amounts of dust, increasing concentrations of PM-10—coarse particles that can aggravate respiratory conditions and pose health risks, especially for children, seniors, and those with lung disease. The advisory covers the greater Yuma area and remains in effect both days unless conditions improve.
City health officials are advising people to stay indoors as much as possible, especially during peak wind hours. Individuals with asthma or heart conditions should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. Schools and employers may consider modifying outdoor activities. Residents are also encouraged to reduce dust-generating actions like leaf blowing or driving on unpaved roads.
This is the first High Pollution Watch for PM-10 in Yuma this year, as spring wind patterns and ongoing drought raise dust concerns across southwest Arizona. Similar advisories are possible later this season.
Air quality alerts will be updated hourly at azdeq.gov/AQ/Alert. The HPW remains in effect through Saturday evening.
