Phoenix, Arizona – A High Pollution Watch (HPW) for ozone has been issued for the Phoenix area on May 8, 2025. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is warning residents to limit outdoor activities as ozone pollution is expected to reach hazardous levels.

According to ADEQ, high ozone concentrations are forecasted to develop throughout the day, with the most significant impacts during midday and afternoon hours when temperatures rise. The agency advises residents to stay informed through hourly air quality updates at azdeq.gov to track pollution levels in real-time.

For those in Phoenix, the Health Advisory impacts are particularly critical for vulnerable groups, including children, older adults, individuals with lung conditions such as asthma, and outdoor workers. Exposure to high levels of ozone can lead to respiratory issues, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and long-term lung damage. ADEQ recommends limiting outdoor exercise and taking frequent breaks if activities are necessary.

To protect yourself, the public is advised to reduce exposure by staying indoors, using air-conditioned spaces, and minimizing strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. In addition, maintaining proper tire pressure, refueling vehicles during cooler hours, and using low-emission products can help reduce ozone formation.

The High Pollution Watch remains in effect for May 8, and further alerts may follow depending on air quality trends.
