Flagstaff, Arizona – Strong southwest winds and critically low humidity will elevate wildfire risk across eastern Arizona this weekend, with a Fire Weather Watch in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, wind speeds of 20 to 25 mph—with gusts up to 45 mph—will combine with humidity levels as low as 9%, creating dangerous fire-starting conditions. The watch covers areas including Eagar-Springerville, Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, St. Johns, and much of the Navajo Nation, where the alert extends until 8 p.m. local time.
Communities like Snowflake, Winslow, Holbrook, and Tuba City are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, keep vehicles off dry grass, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Fire officials stress that even a small spark could lead to rapid wildfire spread under these conditions.
Residents should obey local fire restrictions and avoid using power tools that may produce sparks. This marks one of the first widespread fire watches of the spring season for the region.
The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening, with additional advisories possible if dry and windy conditions persist.
