Grand Forks, N.D. – Isolated severe storms could strike parts of southeast North Dakota and west central Minnesota late Sunday night, bringing hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Level 2 severe thunderstorm risk is in place from late Sunday through Monday. The affected area includes counties along and southeast of the Red River Valley, where instability from a warm front and low pressure system could trigger scattered strong storms.

Cities such as Fargo, Wahpeton, and Detroit Lakes could see brief but intense storm cells capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and localized wind damage. The timing and severity of the storms will depend on how the low pressure system develops overnight.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware by enabling wireless emergency alerts and monitoring local forecasts. Have a shelter plan in place, especially if camping or traveling through rural areas. Power outages and downed branches could impact Monday morning commutes.

This marks one of the first severe weather risks of the season for the northern Plains. Further updates are expected by Sunday afternoon as models refine storm placement and intensity.

Warnings may be issued with short notice Sunday night into early Monday.
