Arapahoe County, CO – An overnight patrol by Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies led to the rescue of two people found approximately 60 feet underground inside a restricted property, marking the second rescue at the location in less than a week.
According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were patrolling just after midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, when they spotted two vehicles parked near the gate of a restricted property in unincorporated Arapahoe County.
While checking the property, deputies reported hearing voices coming from an underground shaft. They located a 19-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman about 60 feet below ground inside what authorities described as an underground confined space.
Investigators said the man was able to climb out using a rope ladder, but the woman was unable to make it back to the surface on her own.
South Metro Fire Rescue responded to the scene and safely rescued the woman. Authorities said neither person was injured during the incident.
Both individuals were issued summonses for second-degree criminal trespass, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials noted this was the second rescue at the same location within the past week, underscoring the dangers associated with entering restricted underground sites.
The sheriff’s office warned that underground confined spaces, including former missile silos and similar structures, can contain hidden hazards such as unstable conditions, toxic gases, and deep vertical shafts that can quickly become life-threatening.
Authorities are urging the public to obey posted warning signs, stay off private property, and avoid entering confined underground spaces. Deputies said the incident also highlights the importance of proactive patrols, which they said helped prevent a potentially more serious outcome.
