Charleston, WV – The Appalachian region faces a wintry turn through Thanksgiving weekend as a strong cold front pushes across the mountains, bringing rain, falling temperatures, and the season’s first widespread snow showers by late Sunday. The timing could create slick travel conditions along key corridors during the post-holiday rush.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Charleston, WV, and Blacksburg, VA, temperatures between November 28 and December 4 will trend 10 to 15 degrees below normal, with highs in the 30s and 40s and lows dropping into the 20s. Rain on Saturday is expected to transition to snow above 2,500 feet overnight, with light accumulations possible on mountain roads and passes from Beckley, WV, to Wise, VA. The Climate Prediction Center also notes above-normal precipitation, suggesting additional snow chances into early next week.

According to the West Virginia Department of Highways, mountain routes including I-77, I-79, and U.S. 19 could see freezing spots early Sunday as cold air deepens behind the front. Gusty northwest winds may reach 35 mph along ridgelines, reducing visibility and driving wind chills into the teens.

Travelers should plan ahead for changing conditions, pack cold-weather gear, and check road reports before heading home from the holiday. Residents are encouraged to protect pets and outdoor pipes as widespread frost and freezing temperatures settle in by Monday morning.
