Anchorage, AK – Southcentral Alaska is bracing for a significant winter storm set to arrive Monday, bringing heavy snowfall and potentially dangerous travel conditions. Residents are urged to prepare for a challenging start to the week, with snowfall expected to impact major highways, including the Richardson Highway, and areas such as the Susitna Valley and Copper River Basin.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Anchorage, snow will begin early Monday and continue into Tuesday, with areas like Anchorage, Kenai, and Palmer seeing varied accumulations. Higher snowfall is anticipated in northern regions and mountainous areas. In Anchorage, new snow totals may reach 1 to 2 inches by Monday evening, with steady snowfall likely until Tuesday morning.

Monday Through Tuesday: Heavy Snow and Travel Hazards

As the winter storm intensifies, snow-covered and icy roads will challenge drivers across Southcentral Alaska. Winds may reach up to 10 mph on Monday, reducing visibility further. NWS has advised motorists to plan for delays and use caution on the roads, especially in rural areas and mountain passes where accumulation could be highest.

Extended Forecast: Continued Cold with Snow Showers

Following the storm, Tuesday will remain mostly cloudy, with another chance of snow showers and gusty winds up to 25 mph. By Wednesday, conditions will calm, bringing a brief break with partly sunny skies and highs around 33°F, although chilly lows near 21°F are expected overnight. Another system could bring mixed precipitation by Thursday, potentially extending hazardous conditions.
