Champaign, IL – Holiday plants like poinsettias, amaryllis, and holiday cacti bring festive charm to homes, but keeping them healthy requires proper care. Experts from the University of Illinois Extension offer tips for maintaining these popular seasonal favorites.
According to Illinois Extension, poinsettias thrive in indirect sunlight for six hours daily, with temperatures between 60°F and 70°F. Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Despite myths, poinsettias are not toxic but may cause mild irritation in pets.
Amaryllis bulbs, often sold in kits, need a sunny spot and soil that drains well. Water sparingly until growth begins, then water when the topsoil dries. After blooming, cut back the stalk and fertilize every three weeks for next year’s flowers.
Holiday cacti, including Christmas and Thanksgiving varieties, prefer bright, indirect light and temperatures between 55°F and 70°F. Let the soil dry out between waterings, and avoid overexposure to sunlight.
Gift a plant this holiday season by attaching care instructions to ensure blooms last well into the new year. Visit the University of Illinois Extension website for detailed guides.
