Ferndale, CA – Nearly 100 earthquakes have been recorded off the Northern California coast since Thursday’s powerful 7.0 quake near Cape Mendocino, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic swarm includes aftershocks ranging from 2.5 to 4.7 magnitude, with most activity concentrated west of Petrolia.

The largest aftershock occurred Thursday evening, registering a magnitude 4.7 about 66 kilometers west-southwest of Ferndale at a depth of 10 kilometers. On Friday morning, a 4.2 magnitude quake struck 37 kilometers west of Petrolia at an extremely shallow depth of 0.1 kilometers.

The original 7.0 earthquake, which hit at 10:44 a.m. Thursday, triggered a tsunami warning for parts of California and Oregon. Although the warning was later canceled, the event has served as a reminder of the region’s seismic activity and tsunami risks.

The USGS reports that the region’s seismic activity is linked to the Mendocino Triple Junction, one of the most tectonically active areas in the United States. Experts warn that aftershocks could continue for days or even weeks, with a possibility of additional quakes exceeding magnitude 5.

Residents are urged to remain alert, review emergency plans, and prepare for potential disruptions as seismic activity continues.
