Amarillo, Texas – Wind gusts up to 55 mph are slamming the Texas Panhandle tonight, driving wind chills into the teens and creating dangerous overnight conditions for anyone outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a strong cold front has pushed south of the region, with northerly winds continuing through roughly 1 to 2 a.m. Saturday before gradually weakening. Overnight lows are expected to drop below freezing in parts of the northwest Panhandle, with some locations seeing temperatures dip into the upper 20s.
Cities including Dalhart, Stratford, and Boise City could see wind chills as low as 19 degrees, while Amarillo, Borger, and Pampa remain in the 20s. Even typically warmer spots like Clarendon and Wellington will feel closer to freezing due to persistent wind.
The combination of strong gusts and cold air may stress power infrastructure and make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles along corridors like I-40 and US-287. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, and bring pets inside overnight.
Conditions improve after sunrise Saturday as winds ease, but cold temperatures will linger early in the day. Additional cold weather alerts remain possible if winds stay elevated longer than expected.
