Texas – Strong winds are already ramping up across the Texas Panhandle, and by early afternoon, conditions will align for rapid wildfire spread near Amarillo and surrounding communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, critical fire weather conditions will develop between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. as south to southwest winds increase with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph. Combined with very dry air, any fire that starts could spread quickly and become difficult to control.
Across Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Dumas, the strongest winds are expected between noon and 6 p.m., especially along open roadways like I-40 and US-287. Blowing dust and strong crosswinds could also make travel more difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
Temperatures climb into the 70s this afternoon, adding to the drying effect across grasses and open fields. This creates a volatile setup where even small sparks—from vehicles, equipment, or outdoor burning—could ignite fast-moving fires.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and report any signs of smoke immediately. Fire crews remain on alert across the region.
Conditions improve after sunset as winds begin to ease, but elevated fire danger may linger into early evening.
