Amarillo, Texas – Drivers across the Texas Panhandle are urged to use caution today as patchy freezing drizzle and snow create slick road conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, areas of freezing drizzle are moving northeast across the eastern Panhandles, while snow is spreading in from the west. Snow has already been reported late this morning in Texline, Boise City, Dalhart, and Dumas, with additional light accumulations expected as the system continues east.

Forecasters say snowfall totals through 3 p.m. Friday are expected to remain up to 1 inch, mainly across the western Panhandles. Farther east, including areas near Amarillo, Clarendon, and Wheeler, ice accumulations from freezing drizzle are expected to remain at or below a trace to 0.01 inch, but even small amounts of ice can lead to hazardous travel.

Road conditions may deteriorate quickly, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. While widespread power outages are not anticipated, slick conditions could lead to delays and minor accidents.

Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and monitor local conditions as precipitation tapers later this afternoon.
