Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rain and storms are expected to develop late Saturday, bringing the potential for flash flooding across the western and central Texas Panhandle. Forecasters say the greatest risk arrives between 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday, with rainfall rates reaching up to 2 inches per hour.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms will increase in coverage through the evening, especially west of Interstate 27. Areas including Amarillo, Dumas, Hereford, and Dalhart may see localized flooding where the heaviest bands set up. Overnight flooding in low-lying areas and along rural roadways could create dangerous travel conditions.
Emergency officials are reminding drivers that just a few inches of moving water can wash away vehicles. If roads flood, motorists are urged to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Flash flooding is most likely along creeks, underpasses, and areas with poor drainage.
Showers and storms may linger into early Sunday, with the potential for additional rounds of rain through Monday for the Panhandle region. Residents should remain alert for changing conditions and updated advisories.
