Amarillo, TX — Amarillo is on the brink of setting a new heat record as the city faces its 10th consecutive day of temperatures reaching or exceeding 100 degrees. If the mercury hits 100 degrees today, Amarillo will break its previous record by two days.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, today’s temperatures are expected to be 5 to 10 degrees above the normal for late August. Despite slightly lower temperatures than recent days, the heat remains intense across the region, with other areas such as Palo Duro Canyon forecasted to reach a sweltering 106 degrees.

High temperatures are a concern not only for Amarillo but also for surrounding towns like Borger, where temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees, and Hereford, which is also forecasted to reach 100 degrees. These persistent high temperatures are challenging the region’s previous heat records, including the 102-degree record set in Amarillo in 1936.

Local officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses as the extreme temperatures continue to bear down on the region. As the heatwave persists, the community remains vigilant in monitoring the weather closely.
